Associate Research Professor - Earth and Mineral Sciences
The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) at the Pennsylvania State University is seeking an Associate Research Professor to act as the Managing Director of the EMS Museum. The successful candidate will: assume broad responsibility for ensuring ethical collections stewardship of EMS Museum collections that is consistent with best practices of collections care as outlined by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) and International Council for Museums (ICOM). Oversee care of EMS Museum permanent collection through the application of best practices for professional collection management, implementation of appropriate policies and practices governing preventive conservation, documentation, security, storage, and physical/digital access to the collection. Identify, assess, and mitigate risks to museum collections and to museum personnel and visitors interacting with collections. Maintain and raise awareness of trends in the highest level of collection care for all collection types while being realistic and mindful of resources that are available or accessible (e.g., space, budgets, personnel). Work with EMS Museum staff, advisory board, and other entities to develop schedule of informative, engaging, and relevant exhibitions that reflect the mission, vision, and collections of the EMS Museum that will engage new visitors and retain core audiences. Possess working familiarity with and ability to oversee all steps of design, development, production, and project management of exhibitions including: developing exhibit content, narrative structure, and educational approaches; identifying, selecting, and organizing collection objects and exhibit props; researching, writing, and editing didactic copy; specifying and coordinating construction and installation of three-dimensional and virtual exhibitions. Assume broad responsibility for overseeing the development and implementation of formative and summative exhibition evaluation and assessment of aesthetic and learning impacts, visitor interaction. Combine research, teaching, communication skills, and creativity with a solid, but general knowledge of the disciplines and history represented in the EMS Museum`s collection. Conduct research and interpretation of materials for collection-related educational activities through the curation of the collection. Maintain an on-going research and scholarship agenda relevant to the theoretical background, history, function, scholarship, and social and political context of the EMS Museum, its collections, the College, and the University. Develop and maintain interdisciplinary collaborations with university, regional, national, and international museum and education professionals and scholars. Create written and oral presentations that promote the EMS Museum history, innovations, and practices to peers, colleagues, students, and local, national, and global audiences. Actively participate in the teaching and research mission of the College. Possess broad research and teaching interests within developing areas of object-based learning, engaged scholarship, lifelong learning, and informal science education. Devise curricula and internship opportunities; teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; advise students and museum staff interested in working toward pursuing careers in the full range of 21st century museum activities. Develop and lead professional development opportunities for educators, museum professionals, and others interested in intersections of art, science, and object-based research and learning. Must have a Ph.D. in Education, Museum Studies, or a related field by the time of hire. This is a fixed term multiyear position, funded for 3 years from the date of hire, with excellent possibility of refunding.
