The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at The Pennsylvania State University is welcoming applicants for the position of Associate Director of the Undersea Systems Office (USO). The USO includes approximately 350 research faculty, research engineers, and supporting technical/non-technical staff. Research and technology areas of USO include: Undersea Vehicle Design and Development; Advanced SONAR Systems; Signal Processing, Target Tracking/Classification, and Data Fusion; Autonomous Vehicle Guidance and Control; Embedded, Real-Time Software; Power and Energy Systems; and Modeling and Simulation/Operations Research. We are open to hiring the successful candidate in either the Research and Development Engineer track or non-tenure Faculty rank.
The Associate Director of the USO is a key role, and will provide overall leadership, direction, and oversight for programs and research activity across these advanced technology areas, recruitment, professional development, and promotion in rank of current and future generations of the USO faculty and staff.
Minimum of a Master's degree (PhD preferred) in a scientific or engineering discipline plus 15 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
The following attributes are required:
*Strong evidence of a national reputation in at least one of the core technology areas of the USO; experience with sponsoring offices for relevant technology areas
*A record of technical accomplishments in research areas as noted above;
a proven ability to obtain external funding for proposed research; willingness and ability to travel to represent ongoing programs with sponsors and to develop new research initiatives
*Broad experience across relevant defense and related US Government domains; experience with Navy, DoD, and industrial research funding activities; excellent presentation skills for effective written and verbal communication
*Excellent and proven organizational and technical management skills, as evidenced by previous positions and accomplishments; and strong interpersonal skills as demonstrated by team building and key employee development.
You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply. You will be subject to government security investigation and must possess a current eligibility for a Top Secret security clearance; candidates holding an active clearance will be given preference. Due to the financial or fiduciary responsibilities of this position, successful completion of a credit history check will also be required, in addition to standard background checks.
