Instructor and Undergraduate Lab Coordinator Position

The UAB Department of Physics, https://www.uab.edu/cas/physics/, seeks candidates for the position of Instructor and Undergraduate Lab Coordinator. The successful applicant will coordinate all aspects of the operation of the undergraduate laboratories and participate in the teaching and curricular development of the introductory course sequence offered by the Department of Physics.

UAB research funding is at an all-time high of over $800M, while the Physics footprint continues to grow with the new state-of-the-art Science and Engineering Complex that will host the Department in Fall 2023. The Department of Physics is experiencing growth fueled by its focus on Advanced Materials, Optics, and Computation, as well as using emerging technologies to provide equal opportunities for high-quality education across geographical, socio-economic, and gender boundaries. Our research-driven and student-centric Physics Program has witnessed an increase to historic height of the number of Physics majors and overall students taught. Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama, noted for its vibrant music scene, fine dining, warm weather, excellent schools, and a culture embracing diversity within driving distance to Atlanta, Memphis, Nashville, and New Orleans.

This position is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure earning, career-track appointment. The position is renewable annually, subject to performance and funding availability. Duties include:

• Coordinating the administrative, technical and academic operation of all undergraduate laboratories
• Teaching one course each semester (in-person or online)
• Training, scheduling, and supervision of teaching assistants.
• Innovation and collaboration with Physics and Astronomy education faculty in curricular development

An M.S. degree in Physics or closely related area is required. The successful candidate must have teaching experience. We are especially interested in candidates who can translate the findings of physics education research into best teaching practices, build learning communities (live and virtual), and integrate emerging educational technologies in the curriculum. Faculty members hired into the rank of Instructor are eligible to apply for promotion during the annual promotion cycle. Specific criteria regarding promotion timelines will be provided during the interview process.
