University of Missouri - St. Louis

Missouri Institute of Mental Health

Job Description

The Addiction Science Team at UMSL-Missouri Institute of Mental Health (UMSL-MIMH) conducts grant implementation and evaluation services for several federally- and state-funded research and service grants focused on substance use prevention, treatment, recovery, and harm reduction efforts across Missouri. Our overarching goals include preventing overdose deaths, promoting the dignity and worth of people who use drugs, and reducing barriers to evidence-based treatment and recovery services. We accomplish this through training, advocacy, building and supporting community-based programs and partnerships, evaluation, quantitative and community-based research, and outreach. Given the diversity of the communities we serve, it is essential we approach our work with a focus on equity and an attitude of cultural humility. We are currently looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable, inquiring, and compassionate individual to help us conduct engaging research through our addiction-related grant programs, pursue future grant funding opportunities, and supervise, support, and mentor staff on the Addiction Science team.

We are particularly interested in hiring an individual who is focused on community-engaged research (such as community-based participatory research), which may include mixed-methods or qualitative research methods.

Subject matters of primary interest include but are not limited to substance use disorder AND:

  • Implementation Science
  • Health Disparities/Racial Inequities
  • Addiction Health Services Research
  • Social Determinants of Health

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Formulate and investigate research questions that will yield maximum clinical impact in the field of opioid and other substance use disorder treatment, recovery, and harm reduction interventions
  • Demonstrate values consistent with diversity, equity, and inclusion through attending to research questions regarding racial disparities and participating in efforts to advance equity in substance use services
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with funders, community partners, and staff
  • Serve in Principal Investigator roles for existing substance use-focused grant programs (and later obtain funding in Principal Investigator and/or Co-Investigator roles)
  • Serve as the supervisor on record for at least two staff members involved in qualitative research and evaluation projects
  • Collaborate with addiction-focused faculty within UMSL’s Department of Psychological Sciences

Qualifications

  • PhD in psychology, public health, education, social work, health economics, or related fields
  • Strong leadership and personnel supervision skills
  • Strong quantitative, mixed-methods, or qualitative research skills
  • Ability to lead, design, and facilitate community-engaged research initiatives
